Cureatr Employee Spotlight: Emily Carlson - People Operations Lead

emily_cureatrFor this month's employee spotlight, we spoke with Emily Carlson. Emily grew up in Virginia Beach, VA and went to school at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond. She’s been living in New York City for five years. Emily was promoted to Cureatr’s People Operations Lead a year ago. She really enjoys finding top talent to join Cureatr and keeping the team happy and engaged.

What is one favorite thing about your job?

My favorite thing about my job is the people. I’ve always known that I loved working with people and genuinely look forward to coming to work because I love the team. This job comes very naturally to me because it’s the perfect balance of what I do best, having fun and working closely with people. I really enjoy researching what other companies are doing to help keep work fun and employees happy. But,  I also like to think outside of the box to find creative activities and events that are meaningful for everyone.

What do you find most challenging about your job?

Balancing different personalities can be challenging , especially when it comes to planning events and rolling out company initiatives. Luckily, I have a psychology background and have experience working with different personality types and work styles.  When those challenging moments come up, I try to find an approach that works best for everyone.

How would you describe Cureatr in 3 words?

Innovative, Fun, and Cutting-edge.

What is your proudest moment at Cureatr?

My proudest moment was definitely my promotion to People Operations Lead last summer. I remember feeling stuck in my old role and had a conversation with our CEO, Richard, expressing my interest in leading our recruiting, hiring, and on-boarding. He was undoubtedly supportive and willing to give me the power to go after something that I really wanted. It’s super rare that you have a boss that says “go for it” so it was such a rewarding experience!

What is one thing unique about you that people would be surprised if they knew?

I think the fact that I used to work as a sea-turtle conservationist in Hawaii for a few of years is really surprising to people. Also, people tend to be very surprised by the fact that I'm the oldest of four for some reason.

What is one thing unique about you that people would be surprised if they knew?

I grew up playing the piano, then took a break from it, but I recently bought a new keyboard so I started playing again! I also love to sing.

What do you enjoy doing when you are not working?

Lately, I have been getting into fitness and taking up yoga. I also enjoy going to the park and learning new songs on the piano. Living in New York is awesome because there’s never a shortage of places to go and new things to try.

What is the first app you check in the morning? And why?

Hands-down Trulia. I love looking up houses on the market, especially fixer uppers because one of my favorite passions is house renovations. It’s super fun to look at the homes and think “now, what could an open layout do for the space” or any coming up with any other project to help make the place better. Back in Richmond, I helped my friend rebuild his bathroom which was a lot of trial and error but thankfully, after much Googling and a ton of YouTube tutorials, we made it happen!

What is your to-go sing along song in the shower? Why?

I have to say Shania Twain - “Man! I Feel Like A Woman” because it’s my jam and one of those songs you never tire of. It’s also my go-to karaoke song!
